Main Test : ELCID Test, Detecting Stator Core Faults Early

stands for Electromagnetic Core Imperfection Detection. It is an offline, low-flux test used mainly on the stator core of motors and generators to find inter-lamination insulation faults or shorted laminations in the iron core. Those faults can create hot spots, overheating, and core damage when the machine runs.

In simple terms, the stator core is made of many thin steel laminations insulated from each other. If that insulation breaks down, small circulating currents can flow between laminations. The ELCID test magnetizes the core at a small fraction of normal operating flux and uses a sensor, commonly a Chattock coil, to detect abnormal leakage flux caused by those fault currents. Because it uses low excitation, it is considered much safer and easier than a full-flux ring test.

Why people use it:

• to detect stator core faults early
• to avoid unexpected failures and outages
• to inspect machines during maintenance shutdowns, commissioning, or after repairs
• to compare results over time for condition trending

Main advantages:

• non-destructive
• lower power than ring flux testing
• faster and safer for the machine and operator
• good for locating suspicious areas that may need repair or closer inspection

Main limitation:
ELCID is a diagnostic screening tool. If it shows abnormal areas, engineers often confirm severity with other inspections or tests before deciding on repair. That is an engineering inference based on how the test is used in maintenance practice.

Another Test : Tan Delta Test, Evaluates Insulation Deterioration

The difference between ELCID test and Tan Delta test is mainly in what part of the machine they evaluate and what type of defect they are meant to detect.

ELCID test is used for the stator core.
It checks the iron core laminations and looks for problems such as:

• damaged core insulation between laminations
• local hot-spot risk
• core faults after manufacturing, operation, or repair

So, ELCID is focused on the magnetic core health.

Tan Delta test is used for the insulation system, especially in stator windings, cables, bushings, and high-voltage equipment.
It measures the dielectric loss of insulation and helps detect:

• insulation aging
• moisture contamination
• voids or partial deterioration
• general insulation weakness

So, Tan Delta is focused on electrical insulation quality.

A simple way to understand it:

• ELCID = checks the stator core
• Tan Delta = checks the insulation system

In practical terms:

• If you want to know whether the core laminations are damaged, use ELCID
• If you want to know whether the insulation is deteriorating, use Tan Delta

Both tests are important, but they do not replace each other because they examine different failure risks.
